Everything Really Does Come Together Here – Part Three

2020-06-20T17:01:52-04:00June 20th, 2020|Blog, Uncategorized|

In the last two blog posts, I have spotlighted how New Bern has adapted during coronavirus. From the Craven County schools to our favorite restaurants to helping out charitable organizations, New Bern residents truly come together. Here are three “normal for now” activities to enjoy: The Grass is Green Tryon Palace's gardens are a must-see anytime you visit New Bern. Every season brings a different collection of blooms. While the Governor’s Palace remains closed, the Tryon Palace Gardens are open and seem even more majestic than before. I had previously heard the gardens were the plan of a

2020-01-27T12:42:34-05:00January 27th, 2020|Blog, Uncategorized|

Many of you know that New Bern served as the first state capital and home to the first capitol building, Tryon Palace. On my most recent excursion to New Bern, I had a business side trip to Raleigh. Finally, the opportunity to experience the “other” North Carolina capitol building. For those of you who follow this blog, you likely realize it will be my number-one stop during free time. Pre-Visit Refresher First, a brief history lesson as to why Raleigh was favored over our beloved town. As the latter part of the 18th Century progressed, so did the population growth moving

Next week is the official welcome to autumn. That means the leaves will soon be changing, cooler temperatures are ahead and outstanding New Bern events are just around the corner. While I love visiting New Bern in any season, I am somewhat partial to fall. I just checked out the amazing calendar of events coming up this weekend, and I wanted to be sure you were in the know! Friday Union Point Park will be rockin' this Friday for the Footloose on the Neuse concert! On September 14, New Bern Parks and Recreation presents the final “Footloose on the Neuse”

The Perfect History Lesson

New Bern is known for many things, whether that is for the themed bears, the scenic waterfront or the memorable downtown. Perhaps it is most famously known for being the site of the first state capitol building, Tryon Palace. While I have toured the awe-inspiring palace and grounds, I recently discovered the North Carolina History Center, located adjacently to Tryon Palace. The center is a magnificent museum-like place showcasing the history of the local area. Considering all my visits to New Bern, I thought I knew more than the average person about the area's history. As I walked through the exhibits,

Step Outside the Comfort Zone

2018-04-03T22:53:25-04:00April 3rd, 2018|Blog|

On one of my recent trips to New Bern, I decided to be bold and step outside my comfort zone. Meaning, I literally stepped outside of New Bern. This is the trail I hiked--Island Creek. I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was considered easy! When I inquired as to a nice place to hike and soak in the sights, the hotel clerk kindly suggested Croatan National Forest. How amazed I was to see that just a few miles south, a whole other world existed. While New Bern has its amazing restaurants, beautiful riverfront and historical

March Over to New Bern’s Event Weekend

2018-03-05T23:14:29-05:00March 5th, 2018|Blog, Uncategorized|

I’ve written in previous posts about all that makes New Bern so remarkable to live. March is no exception, however there are too many special events to cover in this post. Suffice it to say March Madness could also describe New Bern’s events calendar in addition to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I am looking forward to attending a big party on Friday, March 16. The Rotary Club of New Bern is hosting Sham-Rockin’ 2018. The fundraiser, with food from The Chelsea, a live band and the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace as the backdrop, is sure to be a

First and Foremost, New Bern Is Second to None

2017-12-20T13:22:34-05:00September 20th, 2017|Blog|

It's evident the City of New Bern is one of pride, community spirit and friendly people. However, I had no idea New Bern was a place of firsts! As you drive, bike or walk through the city, you are likely to come upon two of them. I was in a gardener's dream at the Tryon Palace Gardens. Did you know New Bern was the site of the first capitol building for North Carolina? Tryon Palace was commissioned under Governor Tryon, and in 1771 it opened. During the Revolutionary War, the palace was burned to the ground. This tragedy, coupled
