We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

There must be something about a city named Greenville in the Carolinas. The city in South Carolina is one of my favorite places to visit. Believe it or not, I had never taken the time to drive to Greenville, North Carolina, just 47 miles away from New Bern. Nicknamed The Emerald City (I can only assume due to the city name and the amount of green space), North Carolina's Greenville is a magical city to visit, and no ruby slippers required! Ahoy, Matey Trustees Fountain at ECU is a landmark and gathering place on campus. Greenville may best be

New Bern is a wonderful place to be at any given day of the year. Being here on a holiday weekend seems to be even better. Memorial Day Weekend is the last one in May, and New Bern has plenty of activities to keep us entertained. Below are three to enjoy. Footloose and Fancy-Free The annual concert series kicks off on May 24! Friday evening kicks off with the first outing of Footloose on the Neuse Summer Concert Series. Join your friends at Union Point Park, a beautiful backdrop at the convergence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. Be

Wilmington Has Browsing History

The USS Battleship North Carolina is an authentic on-board museum. As I have written in the past few posts, New Bern is perfectly located near really cool places. So, when you feel the need to get out and about beyond the city, you have plenty of options. A place I love to visit this time of year is Wilmington. The city is less than 100 miles down U.S. 17. There is much to do here, so I am breaking my visit down into two posts. This post focuses on three unique museums for history buffs. Don't Sink This Battleship

Goldsboro, A Gold Mine for Nostalgia

As I have said before, one of the many cool things about New Bern’s location is its proximity to other cool places. Just 60 miles west up the road is Goldsboro, a small city that is the epitome of North Carolina. When I was younger, we would travel from Florida to visit my grandmother, who lived in Goldsboro. I thought it was time to visit the place that held fond childhood memories. Many of my favorite places are no longer there, but the beauty of this town remains, as evidence by Beech Street. Beech is the street my Granny lived on,

Taking Flight to Havelock

2019-02-08T18:16:11-05:00February 8th, 2019|Blog, Uncategorized|

It seems like every time I visit New Bern, I either plan to visit Havelock or run into someone that says, “You should go to Havelock.” Well, I finally did it. And, I now know what I have been missing. Eastern Carolina's Aviation History The town is just a short, easy drive from New Bern. It took me less than 20 minutes. Top of the day’s agenda was to visit the Havelock Visitor’s Center, where there is a very interesting aviation exhibit. I had no idea of the depth of heritage and culture here. There are some truly unique displays of

A Trip Forward Back in Time

In all my travels when I choose to venture outside New Bern, one place I had yet to visit was Kinston. With the new year comes new places to see, so I headed west on U.S. Highway 70 just 35 miles down the road. The drive to Kinston is an easy one, and one that I am glad I did. Who would have thought a city with a population of only 21,000 people could be filled with such expansive history? Fire! Caswell #1 Fire Station Museum features a pumper from 1922. First up was the Caswell #1 Fire Station

Ho, Ho, Home for the Holidays

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow in New Bern at Bear Plaza! The holiday season is in full force, and there is no place I would rather be than New Bern. While there is a host of activities and events throughout the last week of December, two stick out for me. Hop on Board the Polar Express! On Sunday, December 23, I made plans for the inner kid in me. I will be joining friends on the Polar Express for an hour of caroling and bright lights through downtown on the New Bern Trolley. There

The Perfect History Lesson

2018-07-09T23:39:48-04:00July 9th, 2018|Blog, Uncategorized|

New Bern is known for many things, whether that is for the themed bears, the scenic waterfront or the memorable downtown. Perhaps it is most famously known for being the site of the first state capitol building, Tryon Palace. While I have toured the awe-inspiring palace and grounds, I recently discovered the North Carolina History Center, located adjacently to Tryon Palace. The center is a magnificent museum-like place showcasing the history of the local area. Considering all my visits to New Bern, I thought I knew more than the average person about the area's history. As I walked through the exhibits,

Life’s a Beach, Part II

Part Two, Atlantic Beach Now that summer has begun (even though the official date is June 21), I plan to spend more and more time at the beach, basking in the sun along the sandy shores while reading a good book. In last month's post, I focused on the spectacular food choices in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. This month, it's all about the spectacular shoreline of North Carolina. On my next visit to the New Bern area, I once again found myself making the short drive to Atlantic Beach. The water tower says it all. The beach has

Step Outside the Comfort Zone

2018-04-03T22:53:25-04:00April 3rd, 2018|Blog|

On one of my recent trips to New Bern, I decided to be bold and step outside my comfort zone. Meaning, I literally stepped outside of New Bern. This is the trail I hiked--Island Creek. I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was considered easy! When I inquired as to a nice place to hike and soak in the sights, the hotel clerk kindly suggested Croatan National Forest. How amazed I was to see that just a few miles south, a whole other world existed. While New Bern has its amazing restaurants, beautiful riverfront and historical
