The Quest for the Perfect ‘Cue

Eastern North Carolina barbecue is perfection. Is your mouth watering yet? Let me begin by saying I love North Carolina barbecue. I mean, I really, really love it. I grew up on this pork perfection (don't even get me started that some actually think beef) all the way from my small hometown near Tampa, Florida. Every summer when my family would travel to see grandparents, aunts and uncles to Goldsboro, Wilson and family reunions, I would overindulge on this delicacy of Eastern Carolina. Recently, I took a road trip down the street and up north in search of

The mums say it best! Fall has arrived, and that can mean only one thing. Well actually several things, as New Bern is chock full of activities lined up for October. Three of my absolutely favorite events celebrate the beautiful blooms seen throughout our hometown, mums! MumFest, MumFest Concert and MumFeast are set, so now it is just a matter of how to fit in all the fun. The Best Fest Mark those calendars for the weekend of October 8 and 9, when the city is in full bloom! The entire downtown is transformed into a massive floral

Take a Hike

2022-07-20T14:53:21-04:00July 20th, 2022|Blog, Uncategorized|

I recently had a free Saturday morning, and I thought a fantastic way to be productive over the weekend was a nice, long hike in 90-degree weather. Joking of course about the heat, I wanted to take in some fresh air and some new scenery. Less than 20 miles down the road from New Bern, we have an amazing place to take a hike and more. Learn Something New Croatan (pronounced crow-ah-ten) National Forest spans nearly 160,000 acres. Located in Havelock, the forest is the only coastal one along the Eastern Seaboard. I learned the name comes from the Indian

Here are three recommendations of activities over the course of the weekend of July 15-17 for the entire family to enjoy. Family Time #1 - Friday Fort Macon State Park is a short drive from New Bern. A Day on, in and by the Water

2021-07-26T15:54:42-04:00July 22nd, 2021|Blog, Uncategorized|

This has been a hot summer all over the country, so I thought I would spotlight three activities to enjoy in August to get your day on, in or by the water. Day on the Water – Cliffs of the Neuse State Park If you are looking for wide, open spaces, then this park about an hour down the road fits to a tee. In the early 1940s, Lionel Weil donated the land as he thought the natural beauty should be preserved. The Cliffs of the Neuse offers seven different walking trails, along with picnicking areas and Visitor Center with

That’s Entertainment!

2021-04-27T15:45:33-04:00April 27th, 2021|Blog, Uncategorized|

I love how every month in New Bern, there are so many entertainment options. May is no exception! Check out these three finds: In Plein Sight The marina is a "stroke of genius" as a wonderful setting to paint. With New Bern’s spectacular setting of Tryon Palace, the riverfront and historic downtown (just to name a few), the city provides a perfect backdrop for a painter’s inspiration. Plein Air New Bern is an event to leave the four walls of a studio behind and experience painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries, but

Three Restaurants, One Great Meal After Another

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, our back-to-normal continues to evolve. Not sure if you feel like COVID-19 stands for the number of pounds gained over these last several months, but it is spot-on for me. I want to thank the amazing New Bern restaurants that have helped add those pounds. While there are too many to list in one post, here are three of my favorites: La Casetta I have raved about this magnifico Italian eatery before, and I am going to do it again. La Casetta is the place to be for authentic Italian food. My recommendation is to

Despite setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, developers are moving forward with plans for West New Bern, Weyerhaeuser’s planned mixed-use community near N.C. 43 and U.S. 70. According to Todd Powell, Weyerhaeuser’s president of Real Estate Development, ground has been broken for a planned 224 unit apartment complex, with construction expected to begin in early January.
