I’ve written in previous posts about all that makes New Bern so remarkable to live. March is no exception, however there are too many special events to cover in this post. Suffice it to say March Madness could also describe New Bern’s events calendar in addition to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I am looking forward to attending a big party on Friday, March 16. The Rotary Club of New Bern is hosting Sham-Rockin’ 2018. The fundraiser, with food from The Chelsea, a live band and the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace as the backdrop, is sure to be a

Beer Necessities in Bear Town

New Bern is known for the 60 themed, ceramic bears located throughout the city, hence the nickname Bear Town. However, it could soon become known for its outstanding selection of places to relax with a cold beer. A flight of craft brews at Beer Army. On one of my recent jaunts to New Bern, I wanted to investigate two places in the historic downtown that I overheard some locals raving about. While I am a visitor, I prefer to take in the sights, sounds and flavors of where the locals prefer to frequent. I first stumbled (figuratively, not literally)

Don’t Forget Your Fruits and Veggies

On one of my trips to New Bern, I had the opportunity to stay over the weekend. What a treat, as I soon discovered the city boasts an incredible Saturday Farmers' Market. Held in the historic downtown district, the Farmers Market was an amazing sight. There must have been close to 100 vendors selling one-of-a-kind items, dessert goodies, hand-painted treasures and of course, delectable fresh fruits and veggies. Being the holiday season, I had the added pleasure of holiday treats. The holidays in New Bern are one-of-a-kind, from crafts to celebrations! The Saturday Farmers Market is a wonderful

Park Yourself Here for Relaxation

This is the first riverfront park I have been to where you are this close to the water. I had heard that New Bern boasted several parks and green spaces. However I was still pleasantly surprised that one of the first places I came upon was a riverfront setting to kick my shoes off and enjoy the spectacular view.   The Union Point Park pavilion has been the site of many gatherings, including weddings! Union Point Park spans six acres along the convergence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. With a pavilion, playground, benches and several shady areas,

A Tale of Two Pounds (in One City)

2017-12-20T13:23:18+00:00 October 12th, 2017|Blog, Uncategorized|

I have visited New Bern a few times now, and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit, each time I leave with some extra baggage. As in a couple of extra pounds! I refuse to take the blame. The restaurant options are too enticing to ignore. The Chelsea is located on Middle Street in New Bern's historic downtown. On my first visit, I met some friends, including Weyerhaeuser's Kellie Hawkins, at The Chelsea. One word to describe the meal—indescribable! I ordered the filet mignon, prepared medium rare (the only way I think a filet should be prepared), and I promised myself
