Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow in New Bern at Bear Plaza! The holiday season is in full force, and there is no place I would rather be than New Bern. While there is a host of activities and events throughout the last week of December, two stick out for me. Hop on Board the Polar Express! On Sunday, December 23, I made plans for the inner kid in me. I will be joining friends on the Polar Express for an hour of caroling and bright lights through downtown on the New Bern Trolley. There

Gobble Up These Thanksgiving Activities

No worries--you won't look like a turkey at the Twin Rivers YMCA Turkey Trot! The holiday season is just around the corner, and a great place to celebrate Thanksgiving weekend is in New Bern. I love this time of year in New Bern. The entire town magically lights up into a winter wonderland. The weather brings clear, sunny days and crisp, chilly nights (a good reason to snuggle up with loved ones). The perfect way to start the impending 3,000-calorie Thanksgiving Day is to participate in the 11th Annual Twin Rivers YMCA Turkey Trot. The fun begins Thursday at

First, MumFest is just around the corner. The kick-off concert is Friday, October 12, with headliners Dan + Shay! Have a Nice Weekend (Make that a Great One)

Next week is the official welcome to autumn. That means the leaves will soon be changing, cooler temperatures are ahead and outstanding New Bern events are just around the corner. While I love visiting New Bern in any season, I am somewhat partial to fall. I just checked out the amazing calendar of events coming up this weekend, and I wanted to be sure you were in the know! Friday Union Point Park will be rockin' this Friday for the Footloose on the Neuse concert! On September 14, New Bern Parks and Recreation presents the final “Footloose on the Neuse”

Outdoor Dining is the “In” Thing

There is one thing almost anyone you meet in New Bern will agree on. The restaurants here are absolutely incredible. Whether you are in the mood for seafood, steak or some good ol’ Southern cookin’, you will be satisfied. I wrote in a previous blog post about the amazing restaurants in town, and below are a few to enjoy for dining outdoors. Persimmons Restaurant boasts a large deck to enjoy views of the Neuse River. Riverfront Dining An ideal outdoor dining option is Persimmons Restaurant, directly on the Neuse River. The restaurant is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

The Perfect History Lesson

2018-07-09T23:39:48-04:00July 9th, 2018|Blog, Uncategorized|

New Bern is known for many things, whether that is for the themed bears, the scenic waterfront or the memorable downtown. Perhaps it is most famously known for being the site of the first state capitol building, Tryon Palace. While I have toured the awe-inspiring palace and grounds, I recently discovered the North Carolina History Center, located adjacently to Tryon Palace. The center is a magnificent museum-like place showcasing the history of the local area. Considering all my visits to New Bern, I thought I knew more than the average person about the area's history. As I walked through the exhibits,

Life’s a Beach, Part II

2018-06-07T18:57:54-04:00June 7th, 2018|Blog, Uncategorized|

Part Two, Atlantic Beach Now that summer has begun (even though the official date is June 21), I plan to spend more and more time at the beach, basking in the sun along the sandy shores while reading a good book. In last month's post, I focused on the spectacular food choices in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. This month, it's all about the spectacular shoreline of North Carolina. On my next visit to the New Bern area, I once again found myself making the short drive to Atlantic Beach. The water tower says it all. The beach has

You basically have a water view from anywhere in Morehead City. Part One, Food With a long holiday weekend less than two weeks away, I started thinking about the ideal place to enjoy the official kick-off to summer. While spending time in New Bern is simply exquisite, one of the wonderful things about living in or visiting New Bern is the proximity to other places without a long drive. One such place is Morehead City, just 36 miles from New Bern. I had visited this splendid quaint town about a year ago, and I knew it would be on

Step Outside the Comfort Zone

2018-04-03T22:53:25-04:00April 3rd, 2018|Blog|

On one of my recent trips to New Bern, I decided to be bold and step outside my comfort zone. Meaning, I literally stepped outside of New Bern. This is the trail I hiked--Island Creek. I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was considered easy! When I inquired as to a nice place to hike and soak in the sights, the hotel clerk kindly suggested Croatan National Forest. How amazed I was to see that just a few miles south, a whole other world existed. While New Bern has its amazing restaurants, beautiful riverfront and historical

March Over to New Bern’s Event Weekend

2018-03-05T23:14:29-05:00March 5th, 2018|Blog, Uncategorized|

I’ve written in previous posts about all that makes New Bern so remarkable to live. March is no exception, however there are too many special events to cover in this post. Suffice it to say March Madness could also describe New Bern’s events calendar in addition to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I am looking forward to attending a big party on Friday, March 16. The Rotary Club of New Bern is hosting Sham-Rockin’ 2018. The fundraiser, with food from The Chelsea, a live band and the North Carolina History Center at Tryon Palace as the backdrop, is sure to be a
